Gerbils are rodents belonging to the same family as rats, mice and hamsters however, they are a whole lot cleaner.  Gerbils clean themselves very efficiently and never smell. A small bowl is fine for gerbils to clean themselves but, make sure it is not a deep bowl, their small legs prevent swimming and they might drown.

Make sure the bathing bowl is glass, ceramic or metal or gerbils WILL chew it up! Gerbils are desert creatures and do not need much water, however, you should provide them with fresh water at all times. They like tidy spaces, and they ask the same of their owners.
